How Long Do VHS Tapes Last? How Can I Tell Mine Is Deteriorating?

The lifespan of a VHS tape varies anywhere from 10 to 30 years. Many factors can lead to the decrease in the life of a VHS tape. For more on that, read our blog post titled "What's The Best Way to Store Old Videotapes Before They're Converted".

An easy way to check whether your VHS tape is deteriorating or not is to look at the tape itself. On the side of a VHS tape, there is a little button. Push that button in, and it'll release the tape flap so you can look at the tape. Videotape, whether it's VHS, Hi8, or any other type of film, should be shiny, dark, and pliable. If your VHS tape has a milky brown color to it, it may be too brittle to play and transfer. Also, check your VHS tape for any tears in the tape. Another very common thing to see is mold in the VHS tape case. If we see that here, we won't transfer the tape as that mold can transfer into our machines.

Even if your tape looks pristine, it is deteriorating. Remember, recordings done in the 80's and early 90's are over 30 years old now. We do our best here at Our Memories in Motion to get the most accurate transfer.
